LASIK, which is also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis- is the most popular form of laser based eye operation, which is performed to treat nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Like other forms of refractive surgery, a Lasik surgery helps to restructure the cornea, so that light which enters the eyes can focus on the retina properly, which in turn results in clear vision.
Laser eye surgery is devoid of any sort of pain and is real quick. Most of these operations are done within 20 minutes. For both eyes! Result of a successful Lasik surgery is improved vision and no need of wearing contact lenses or eye glasses. The result will start showing within 24 hours of the operation. There are numerous laser based eye surgeries available which are aimed towards improving the vision. Among them Lasik is the most reliable one and is said to have a very high success rate.
How a Lasik surgery is performed?
The following is the Lasik eye surgery procedure
a) To begin with, the surgeon would create a flap in the cornea using a femtosecond laser or a tool called microkeratome
b) The flap is then folded back in order to get access to the cornea which lies under the flap. It is also known as stroma. Then the surgeon using excimer laser removes some of the corneal tissues. This modern and highly sophisticated laser generates an ultraviolet ray to enhance the microscopic elements in the tissue of the cornea, and then reshapes it
c) People with the problem of nearsightedness the cornea should be flattened and for people with the problem of farsightedness, it is used make the cornea steeper.
d) This ultra violet beams which are generated by the laser helps in smoothing of an uneven cornea and gives it a proper shape. There is a misconception that astigmatism cannot be treated with Lasik.
e) Once the cornea is being reshaped using the laser, the flap is the placed back to its original position. It covers the region from where the corneal tissues were taken out. After this the cornea is left alone to heal.
f) One more important feature of Lasik eye surgery is that there are no bandages or stitches used because the entire operation is done with laser beams.
The Lasik eye surgery procedure is very simple, however, is done only by highly experienced eye surgeons.
