Despite being on track as recently as this past February, Lamborghini’s production Urus SUVfirst shown as a concept at the 2012 Beijing auto show—may not have the clear path to gilded driveways we initially thought. Lamborghini itself green-lit the SUV last year, but the Italian automaker, according to a report from Autocar, is still waiting on a final go-ahead from the powers that be at Audi, its parent company within the Volkswagen Group.

Reportedly, the reluctance stems from Audi’s concern over a potential global economic downturn and instability in the Middle East. The Germans feel there may not be room for another high-bucks performance SUV in the world, after all.
It doesn’t appear as though the Lamborghini’s platform mates, the Bentley SUV and the next-gen versions of the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne have or will be affected by the same train of thought. Despite the unease, we’d be surprised if the world’s super wealthy are ultimately denied the chance to purchase a Urus. After all, Ferrari’s new president seems confident that the market for super expensive cars isn’t going anywhere but up.
